Neighborhood Spotlight: Glover Park
The quaint neighborhood of Glover Park is best characterized by its walkability, proximity to parks, and its strong sense of community. I have lived in this neighborhood now for almost a year and a half (at the time of writing this post) and it certainly feels like home.
Location: North of Georgetown and straddled by Glover-Archbold park to the west and Wisconsin Ave to the east.
History: Glover Park is named after Charles Caroll Glover. Glover was the President of Riggs Bank and played a critical role in the creation of Rock Creek Park, the National Zoo, the National Cathedral, Potomac Park, and his namesake Glover-Archbold Park. In 1924 he donated some of his land (80 acres) and in conjunction with another land gift from oil heiress Anne Archbold, Glover-Archbold Park was formed.
Schools: The neighborhood is zoned to Stoddert Elementary, Hardy Middle School, and Jackson-Reed High School. Hardy and Jackson-Reed are nearby but not in the neighborhood while Stoddert is located right in the heart of the community.
Retail/Attractions: Some of my personal retail favorites that I frequent most often are Whole Foods, Trader Joe’s, Balance Gym, Ace Hardware, and CVS. For restaurants, there is a Chipotle to the modern Spanish cuisine Michelin-star restaurant Xiquet and everything in between.
Housing: The predominant home style are porch front row homes that were built in the 1920-30s. The neighborhood now also features multi-family rental and condo housing.
